HISTORY OF RUM
Rum is made from sugar cane molasses - that's why its history is closely related to that of sugar. The climatic conditions and conditions for growing sugar cane in the Caribbean were ideal, and their plantations spread throughout their territory to satisfy Europe's insatiable hunger for sugar. In 1600, the cruel phenomenon of the "trade triangle" emerged - merchant ships from Europe transporting slaves from Central Africa to work on sugar plantations in the Caribbean, and then sugar to Europe to be sold on the huge market there. The residual juice in sugar production was called molasses and contained 50% sugar. Its fermentation produced the first sugar cane alcohol, brandy, which was given to plantation workers to help them cope with inhumane living conditions. It has also become an important part of the rituals of santeria, a religion born of the merging of local African animistic traditions with those of the Roman Catholic Church. With the discovery of the New World in 1492, the European Middle Ages ended and a new era began.
