THE WINERY
The name "Isole e Olena" appeared in the 1950s, when the De Marki family bought and merged two neighboring wine properties: "Isole" and "Olena", each dating back hundreds of years. The winery is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, halfway between Siena and Florence.
VINEYARDS
The estate lies within the boundaries of the Chianti Classico DOCG, a few hours' drive south of Florence. It was formed from the purchase and consolidation of two neighboring properties – Isole and Olena – by the De Marchi family in the 1950s. In the 1970s, Isole e Olena began a push toward quality, and fourth-generation winemaker Paolo de Marchi began to improve viticulture and viniculture techniques to make better wines in smaller quantities.
VINIFICATION
- Grapes are usually harvested on the second half of October and the must is macerated on the skins for fours weeks. During this time, delestage and pumping over take place twice a day. After malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine is racked into barrel. Fermentation takes place at temperatures around 30°C.
- Ageing: 100% barrel aged: 40% new oak (French and 2% American) for 24 months. The wine is released 2 years after bottling and has a potential over 15 years.
FOOD PAIRING
Cured meat, lamb, veal and beef, poultry.
