Vespolina

Vespolina is an Italian red wine variety. There
are plantations mainly in Piedmont, Italy around Gatinaro and Geme. Studies
show that the roots of the variety come straight to Piedmont, and according to
DNA analyzes, it has a genetic link to the Nebiolo variety. It is mainly used
for blending with Croatina and Nebiolo, with which it shares similar spicy
characteristics. Despite the similarities between the two varieties, Vespolina
has softer tannins that contribute to the production of aromatic wines. The
subtle notes are of wild flowers, mushrooms and green tea leaves. In most cases
blends of the variety are made, and seldom are entirely varietal wines.
There are many synonyms for Vespolina. Some of
the more common are: Balsamina, Canetta, Inzaga, Massana, Nespolina, Vespolino,
Vispavola and others.
Vineyards are relatively resistant to disease
and infection. They are not susceptible to freezing or powdery mildew. The only
disease they get to is powdery mildew.
