Carl Loewen Maximin Herrenberg 1896 Alte Reben
TASTING NOTES
Light yellow color. Beautiful mineral nose with notes of citrus, pear, lychee, flowers, honey and very light petroleum notes. High acidity is felt on the taste. Minerality on the nose, a slight nutty touch and a coppery background to round off the finish.
THE WINERY
The tradition of our winery dates back to 1803. Our ancestors bought vineyards in Maximiner Klosterlay during the secularization under Napoleon. To date, our winery is rooted on these vines. In 2008, we were able to purchase the Carl Schmitt-Wagner winery and with it a true wine cultural monument. His vineyard at Maximin Herrenberg was planted in 1896 with ungrafted vines and still stands today in its original form. This makes it one of the oldest Riesling vineyards in the world.
VINEYARDS
Maximin Herrenberg is south-facing, with red shale soil. This very rare terroir endows the wines with a unique structure. The vines bear yellow fruits similar to currants in shape and size. Extremely aromatic fruit. The yield is very small, only 40 hl/ha, and the wine offers a huge spectrum of captivating aromas combined with a playful elegance.
FOOD PAIRING
Fish, seafood, chicken, cheeses, root vegetables and pumpkins.
